GEDS: Support Groups run twice a month/fortnightly for our members on a Monday night from 5.45-7.30. Once a month these groups are run in the Tom Allan Centre, 23 Elmback street, Glasgow and once a month they are run at Glasgow University, The Gilchrist Postgraduate Club, Gilbert Scott Building, University Avenue, Glasgow, G12 8QQ.
All those experiencing difficulties with disorder eating, exercise, body image etc are welcome. We realise it can be very anxiety provoking to attend your first group, if it would help then a member can come and meet you at the front of the building to bring you inside, please contact us with plenty of notice to arrange this.
Group Norms:
Group norms or rules are ways that participants influence the way their group is run. By deciding on ways that you would like your group to be it can become a safe environment for everyone to participate.
The group has been working on GEDS norms and these are something which the group will work on periodically as it develops.
• To respect each other’s privacy by keeping group information confidential and respecting the privacy of members outside the group.
• To help providing a safe, non-judgmental environment to share any thoughts or feelings.
• To support each other by listening when others speak, offering advice or acknowledging their contribution.
• Strictly no mention of numbers or quantities as this may be triggering to other members: calories, weights, BMI, clothes size, food portions
• No mention of the appearance of other members.
• No mention of eating disorder tips or tricks.
• No pressure to talk.
• Being true to others and oneself.
• Empathy, understanding and respect shown to members at all times.
• Support and encourage other members.
• We are a pro-recovery group.
Supervision:
Supervision is a process undertaken by practitioners such as counsellors and psychologists. Supervision includes discussing professional practice with an experienced and qualified practitioner who can give feedback and guidance as well as making sure the supervisee is practising within the limits of their competence amongst other things. It also gives the opportunity to ensure ethical practice.
While several of the team members practice as counsellors and psychologists, both qualified and in training and have individual supervision we feel it is also important to have a supervisor especially for GEDS. GEDS have an assigned supervisor who meets with the team regularly.
Confidentiality:
The ethical principle of confidentiality refers to information which must remain secret and private. Therefore by attending the group meetings you agree to respect the privacy of all group members by not sharing their confidential information with any outside parties. This means while you may discuss your own experiences and contributions with a family member or friend you should not discuss other member’s personal contributions. You will be asked to sign a confidentiality form the first time you attend a group. These forms will be stored confidentially according to the procedures advised by the British Psychological Society.
The only time the GEDS Team will discuss matters discussed in the group will be in their confidential supervision groups. This is considered by The British Psychological Society to be necessary to improve the effectiveness of the service.
We are hoping to be able to offer a beneficial support to those in need and would be so grateful for your support. We welcome all new members and hope you will feel like joining us at an upcoming group!
